Dow Gets Its Blue Chip Mark

In headlines that make us relieved we don’t have to talk news on a podcast, Dow Inc. will replace DowDuPont on the Dow Jones Industrial Average at the start of trading today.
How we got here: In 2017, Dow Chemical and DuPont merged to create a chemicals conglomerate named DowDuPont. Then, the company said it would separate into three companies, Dow being one of them. And Ms. Laughlin said we could never prove 1+1=3…
So what should you know about Dow? We just want to say one word to you: plastics.
  • As the materials science division of DowDuPont, Dow receives about half its earnings from plastics and other ethylene products, per the FT.
  • But margins are getting increasingly slim with a decline in plastics prices.
If you don’t remember the most recent change to the Dow, it was last year, when firm-in-freefall General Electric got booted after giving the Dow a bad name. Walgreens Boots Alliance took its place on the 30-stock index.

What Else is Brewing....
  • Lyft couldn’t quite keep the engine running on its day one gains. In its second trading session, Lyft stock slumped about 12% and fell below its IPO price.
  • Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he’s considering adding a dedicated news tab and paying publishers for high-quality content.
  • U.S. auto safety regulators said they’re opening an investigation into 3 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles after reports of 3,000+ fires.
  • Kellogg (-2.37%) will sell its Keebler, Famous Amos, and fruit snacks businesses (what a lineup) to Nutella owner Ferrero for $1.3 billion.
  • Ryanair (+0.19%) was one of Europe’s 10 biggest polluters last year. That’s a first for a firm that doesn’t run coal-fired power plants.

  1. The information about the Hyundai and KIA is horrifying! I actually own a KIA but I can't find any info on the reported fires online. Do you know if I need to go get my car checked out or something?

  2. as a content creator, I hope Facebook doesn't go that route. I can just see it turning more into Buzzfeed.

  3. Oh my! Lyft couldn’t keep the engine running on its day one gains? I think this topic is becoming more interesting by the day. I've been hearing conflicting information but I think I understand the whole thing now. Thanks for the clear words.

  4. Ouch! Can't believe that in Lyft's second trading session stock slumped about 12% and fell below its IPO price. It's a major blow if you ask me and I really hope it picks up soon as it's not going to go down well in the market for them.

  5. Wow. Splendid! Trust me, having a dedicated news tab would help reduce fake news spreading all over Facebook! By this a lot of people would not be deceived by anything they come across on the platform! I like the idea!

  6. Facebook is considering paying publishers for high-quality content on a news tab? That would be awesome! Hope one can apply to be a writer or publisher somehow cause I'm really interested in being a part of it when it finally kicks off.

  7. What reports of 3,000+ fires? Not sure I caught the news from the beginning. Is opening an investigation into 3 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles going to bring out exactly what they are looking for? I think I'm getting more confused with the whole thing.

  8. Kellogg wants to sell its Keebler, Famous Amos, and fruit snacks businesses to Nutella owner? About time! I think it will go farther that way. I'm expecting greater progress when the management changes hand.

  9. Lol. I'm also surprised as anyone else when I learnt that Ryanair was one of Europe’s 10 biggest polluters last year. It's quite shocking, especially as the firm doesn’t run coal-fired power plants. I'm just wondering exactly what's causing the pollution.

  10. Dow Inc. will replace DowDuPont? I'm not sure how good this sounds to me! Yeah, Dow receives about half its earnings from plastics and other ethylene products but I'm not sure this will work out as well as they imagine. Or maybe they have something in mind we don't know yet.
